Abstract:A host of pathogenic factors can lead to liver injury; however, the liver can rapidly compensate for the loss, and maintain its normal function and the homeostasis of the entire body. This extraordinary regenerative capacity of the liver requires a high degree of coordination among all the different cell types. Epigenetic events play a fundamental role in this process, ensuring that multiple genes can be simultaneously activated and/or silenced at different stages of the regeneration process, allowing them to be precisely and tightly controlled. In this review, we will discuss the role and significance of DNA methylation, histone modification, chromatin remodeling, and non-coding RNA in liver regeneration, providing new ideas for clinical treatment of liver-related diseases.
