Abstract:Hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection is a major global public health problem. HDV is a defective subvirus that requires the hepatitis B virus (HBV) for assembly and propagation. Compared to HBV-monoinfected patients, individuals with HDV coinfection experience a more rapid progression to advanced liver disease, including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. This review emphasizes the recent advances in HDV virology, epidemiology and the challenges in China to search the opportunities that can move this field forward.
